Seamless Astronomy Monthly Discussions
Seamless Astronomy discussion will be held monthly on Mondays from 1:30-2:30 pm, alternating locations between 60 Garden and CDP.
Attendees must follow the CfA Meeting Conduct Policy.
For presenters:
Expect an audience with a mixture of backgrounds in research, software development, and engineering. Please provide appropriate background on your topic for the whole audience.
Plan to have a combined 30-minute presentation and discussion (see below for suggestions for presentation/discussion times).
If your presentation or discussion needs additional time, please sign up for both 30-minute time slots and message Eric Koch.
We welcome a variety of discussion and presentation topics, including:
Presentations
A typical (but informal) presentation with slides. Plan for 20 min with 10 min of discussion.
Examples: Overview of your project or projects led here at the CfA,
or guest speakers on any data, software, or community related project
Idea/Challenge Brainstorming
Have an idea or current challenge with data, visualization, software, etc that would
benefit from a group discussion? Bring an informal 5-10 min introduction to the idea
or challenge for a 20 min group discussion.
Examples: Visualizing a large data set from a specific file format in real time, input
on choice of language/approach/infrastructure for a specific project or idea.
Tools and tips
Have a favorite tool or tips that would help others in their work? Please share them!
Plan for a brief 5-15 min informal overview, leaving >15 min for open discussion.
Examples: Optimal tips and tricks out of common data visualization and analysis software (e.g., WWT, glue, CIAO, Sherpa),
and literature and data searching/discovery (ADS, Chandra Data Archive and Source Catalog, Unified Astronomy Thesaurus).
Best practices
Share your expertise on a particular type of challenging, or how to optimally use
a certain tool or software
Example: Intro to version control for non-developers; common bottlenecks faced for
large computations
Upcoming opportunities
Are there upcoming internal or external funding opportunities on the horizon?
Or events that attendees may be interested in? Share upcoming news with the group.
Example: Events such as ADASS, dotAstronomy, AAS seminars.
Share NSF, NASA, and other funding announcements.
